Pillow Loft & Specification Database: What 32 Pillow Brands Actually Publish

In brief: we recorded every published specification for 32 pillows sold in the United States directly from their manufacturers’ pages on 15 August 2026. Exactly half of them — 16 of 32 — publish the one number that determines whether a pillow will hold your neck straight: its height. The pillows least likely to tell you are the adjustable ones, where height is the entire selling point. This page is the full dataset, free to cite and reuse with attribution.

Finding 1: adjustable pillows almost never tell you what you are adjusting from

Loft — the height of the pillow under your head — is the specification that decides whether your neck stays in line with your spine or bends all night. It is also the specification most often missing. Across the 32 pillows, 16 publish a height in inches and 16 publish none at all.

The split is not random. Pillows with a fixed height publish it 14 times out of 19. Pillows with adjustable fill publish it just 2 times out of 13 — and one of those two, Pillow Cube, is adjustable only in fixed one-inch steps. So the category sold specifically on getting your height right is the category that will not tell you what the height is. Coop, Layla, Marlow, Avocado, Helix, Xtreme Comforts and Snuggle-Pedic all ship a pillow whose loft you are expected to tune by feel.

There is a defensible reason — a pillow you can unzip and empty has no single height. But the useful figure, the loft as shipped, exists and is simply not stated. A buyer who knows they need about five inches has no way to tell whether they are starting above or below that.

Finding 2: the mattress trial you are thinking of does not extend to the pillow

Sleep brands advertise 100-night and 365-night trials, and buyers reasonably assume the pillow comes with the same terms. Mostly it does not. The median published pillow trial across these 32 products is 30 days.

The extremes are worth knowing before you buy. Tempur-Pedic’s 90-night mattress trial excludes pillows entirely: its published return policy accepts a pillow back only if it arrived damaged or is defective. Casper’s 100-night trial is likewise a mattress term; its pillow carries 30 days. At the other end, Marlow accepts returns for 365 days. Five brands — EPABO, Sleep Number, MARNUR, Xtreme Comforts and Snuggle-Pedic — publish no pillow return window on their own pages at all, in most cases because they route the sale to a marketplace and inherit its policy instead.

Two brands publish figures that contradict themselves: Helix states 30 days on the product page and 100 nights at checkout, and Sutera states 30 nights in the copy while badging a 90-day guarantee on the same page. Both are recorded here as they appear.

Finding 3: several popular pillows sit above any height a body needs

Supported loft is not the pillow’s height on the shelf. It is the gap between your ear and the mattress once your shoulder has sunk in — so a soft mattress needs a lower pillow than a firm one, because your shoulder disappears further into it. Our pillow height calculator computes that gap from frame width, sleeping position and mattress firmness. Across every combination it handles, the centre value for side sleeping lands between 3.5″ and 6.25″ and for back sleeping between 2.75″ and 4.4″. The calculator itself reports each result as that centre value ±0.5″, because half an inch out is not the same as two inches out; the bands in Figure 3 are the centre values, so add half an inch either side for the tolerance the tool actually shows. Stomach sleeping is excluded from both bands — the calculator treats it as a fixed 1–2″ on the grounds that no loft makes the position good for the neck.

Plotting the 16 published lofts against those two ranges shows most contoured and cervical pillows clustering exactly where you would expect, in the 4–5″ band that suits back sleeping and narrower-framed side sleeping. Five sit above the top of the side-sleeping range: Purple’s Harmony in its tall option and the Freeform at 7.5″, Saatva’s high-loft latex at 7″, Beckham at 8″ and the Casper Original at 9″.

That comparison needs one honest caveat, and it matters. Casper’s 9″ is explicitly an uncompressed figure and Beckham’s 8″ is an overfilled down-alternative measurement; both compress substantially under the weight of a head, and neither brand publishes a loaded height. The firm foam and latex figures compress far less. This is precisely why the numbers are not comparable across fill types — and why a published loft on a down-alternative pillow tells you much less than the same number on a moulded foam one.

The full dataset

Every cell below was read from the manufacturer’s own page on 15 August 2026 and links back to it. Where a manufacturer states nothing, the cell reads “not published” — we have not filled gaps with estimates, retailer copy or review-site figures.

Method and limitations

• Source. Manufacturer product, returns and warranty pages only. Where a brand publishes no direct-to-consumer specification and routes buyers to a marketplace, that is recorded as “not published” rather than filled from the marketplace listing.
• Date. All figures captured 15 August 2026. Prices and promotional trial terms change frequently; loft, fill and construction rarely do.
• Sizes are not standard. Seven of these products are not sold in a queen size at all — several sleep brands offer only standard and king, and most cervical pillows come in one fixed size. Prices are labelled with the size they refer to.
• Loft is not measured under load. Published heights are as-manufactured. We did not compress, weigh or physically measure any pillow, and this page makes no first-hand testing claim.
• Not medical guidance. The supported-loft ranges are geometry, not a clinical recommendation. Persistent neck pain is a matter for a clinician.

What to do with this

The practical takeaway is smaller than the dataset. Work out the loft you need first, then treat the 16 pillows that publish a height as the shortlist you can actually check — and treat a long return window as the substitute for a missing spec on the other 16. If a brand will not tell you the height and will not take the pillow back, you are buying blind twice over.
