In brief: we recorded what the manufacturers of 32 popular pillows sold in the US publish on their own websites. 15 of the 32 give no height (loft) at all, the measurement that decides whether a pillow keeps your neck level. The gap is worst where it matters most: 10 of 13 adjustable pillows, sold on the promise of getting your height right, never say what height you start from.
Why our two reports differ by one pillow. The figures here reflect a re-check on 17 September 2026, at which point Helix had begun showing a height at checkout, though still not on its product page. Our Pillow Transparency Report counts only product-page figures, as the 15 August dataset was built that way, and therefore reports 16 of 32 and 11 of 13. One pillow, one methodological choice. Both figures are correct on their own terms and we have left them standing.
Key findings
- 15 of 32 pillows publish no height. Among them: Avocado Green Pillow, Bear Cloud, Coop (two adjustable models), Layla Kapok, Brooklinen’s Marlow, Parachute Down, Sleep Number True Temp, Sutera Dream Deep and The Company Store Legends Hotel Down.
- 10 of 13 adjustable pillows publish no starting height. Only Pillow Cube, Purple Freeform and Helix give one — and Helix only on its checkout page, not its product page.
- A gusset is not a height. Bear and Coop list a 2″ gusset, which is the fabric side panel. It tells you nothing about how high the filled pillow sits under your head.
- Returns are a lottery. Tempur-Pedic’s return policy accepts items back only if damaged at delivery or defective, so a pillow that simply does not suit you cannot go back. Casper allows 30 days. In the August snapshot the published windows ranged from none to 365 days, with a median of 30 days.
- Two brands contradict themselves. Helix says 30 days on the product page and a 100-night trial at checkout. Sutera says 30 nights in its copy while its FAQ offers a 90-day guarantee.
Why height is the number that matters
A pillow’s job is to fill the gap between your head and the mattress so your neck is not bent up or down all night. How big that gap is depends on your shoulder width and how you sleep, which is why the same pillow can suit one person and leave another with a stiff neck. Fill type, firmness and cooling fabric matter less if the height is wrong. You can work out the height your own frame needs with our free pillow height calculator, but you can only compare it with a pillow whose maker publishes a number.

*These brands send buyers to Amazon, and we could not confirm that the websites carrying their names are run by the brands. They are recorded as “not published” under our method; excluding them, 12 of 29 pillows still publish no height.
The full record for all 32 pillows — fill, firmness, cooling claims, trial and return terms, warranty, price and the exact source page for each — is in our pillow specification database.
Method
- Sources: manufacturers’ own product, returns and warranty pages only. Marketplace listings were not used to fill gaps.
- Dates: all 32 pillows recorded on 15 August 2026. Every “no height published” entry, plus the return-policy findings, re-checked on 17 September 2026. One pillow changed (Helix, now listing a height at checkout).
- What counts as height: a stated loft or height for the pillow itself. Length and width, packaging dimensions and gusset depth do not count.
- What we did not do: we did not buy, measure or test any pillow, and we make no claim about how any of them feels or performs. We have no clinician on staff; this is not medical advice.
- Disclosure: Sleep Align earns affiliate commission on one pillow in the dataset (Derila). It publishes its height and is not among the 15.
