Press Kit: The Pillow Transparency Report

The story in one line: half the pillow industry does not publish the one measurement that decides whether a pillow works — and the pillows sold specifically on getting your height right are the least likely to tell you what that height is. Everything below is free to quote and republish under CC BY 4.0 with a link.

We read the official product pages of 32 popular pillows sold in the US and recorded what each manufacturer publishes: loft, fill, firmness, trial window, warranty and price. Not marketplace listings, not retailer pages — the brands’ own sites. Data captured 15 August 2026, key findings re-checked 17 September 2026.

The angle most likely to interest your readers

  • The inversion. Ordinary fixed pillows publish a height 74% of the time. Adjustable pillows — the shredded-foam, zip-out and water-base designs whose entire proposition is that you set the height — publish one 15% of the time. Only two do: the Pillow Cube Side Cube Riser and the Purple Freeform.
  • You pay more for less. Pillows that publish a loft have a median price of $79. Pillows that don’t have a median of $112.
  • A gusset is not a height. Several brands list a 2-inch gusset, which is the fabric side panel. It tells a buyer nothing about how high the filled pillow sits under their head.
  • Brands that contradict themselves. Helix states 30 days on the product page and 100 at checkout. Sutera states 30 nights in its copy while displaying a 90-day badge.
  • Three pillows are taller than almost anyone needs. Casper quotes its Original at 9.0 in “uncompressed”, Beckham Hotel Collection at 8.0 in “overfilled”, and Purple Freeform at 7.5 in — all above the 2.25–6.75 in range our calculator returns across body frames and mattress firmnesses.
  • The window closes before you know. A new pillow commonly takes a couple of weeks to judge fairly. Nearly two in three give you 30 days or less, or say nothing at all.

Quotes you may use

Attributable to Bogdan Bilt, founder of Sleep Align. Use as-is, or get in touch for something tailored to your angle.

“Pillow height is the one specification that decides whether a pillow holds your neck level or bends it all night. Half the brands we checked don’t publish it. You are asked to buy a support product without being told how much support it gives.”

“The pillows sold on adjustable height are the worst offenders, and that is the part I find hardest to explain. If your whole pitch is that the buyer can dial in their own loft, the starting number is not a trade secret — it is the product.”

“What you are left with is trial and error inside a 30-day window, on a product that takes two weeks to judge fairly. That is not a buying decision. That is a guess with a deadline.”

Method, and what it does not show

  • Sources: manufacturers’ own product, returns and warranty pages only. Marketplace listings were not used to fill gaps.
  • What counts as a height: a stated loft or height for the pillow itself. Length, width, packaging dimensions and gusset depth do not count.
  • We did not buy, measure or test any pillow. This is a study of disclosure, not of quality. We make no claim about how any pillow feels or performs, and nothing here says an undisclosed pillow is a bad pillow.
  • No clinician on staff. The recommended loft range cited above comes from our own published calculator. It is a guide, not a clinical standard.
  • One methodological wrinkle, stated openly: Helix publishes no height on its product page but added one at checkout, found on the September re-check. Counting product pages only gives 16 of 32; counting checkout gives 15. Our two reports carry both figures rather than quietly restating one.
  • Disclosure: Sleep Align is affiliate-supported and earns commission on one pillow in the dataset (Derila). It publishes its height and is not among the 16. We have never been paid for placement.
